I have light dog training experience from dealing with my own dogs, as well as friends’ dogs and dogs that I care for with my professional pet sitting business. I love pet sitting but I am really interested in training because it will provide me with more intellectual stimulation.

I’m seeking any and all advice that experienced trainers have to offer regarding certification, experience, business aspects, and training for myself. Where should I start and how did you get started?

If any professional trainers are willing to help me at a more extensive level then I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me a message and we could correspond through e-mail.

Service Dog Training in Tri-State?

Posted by: dogtraining | Comments (1)
t_golike asked:

I am working with a local trainer that has been training/rehabilitating dogs for quite a long time. She is very good at what she does, and is both well liked and well respected in our community. I am also currently with her help owner training a service dog to help mitigate my disabilities. We are trying to determine if there is enough interest in the tri-state, specifically the Evansville, IN area to warrant starting classes for people that are owner training their service dogs. These classes would be both group settings as well as private lessons that would help with obedience through CGC, public access testing and certification, as well as task training. We would also have field trips to get the dogs socialized to different situations they will encounter in the “real” world. We might also eventually offer fully trained service dogs when the need arises. If you live near Evansville, do you see a need for this type of program locally? Thank you for your time.

I’ve been trying to find a way into the profession, either training service dogs, or police dogs. I was wondering what certifications were needed, or if anyone knows someone around Los Angeles that I can start an apprenticeship for.

I have been mentoring for 6 years with a dog trainer who has been teaching and training dogs for forty years and I still have a lot to learn. My mentor has so much knowledge(judges, teaches, knows all the AKC rules and standards and runs obedience programs) but still does not claim to be an expert. I do not understand why with all of the aggression problems and behavioral problems that we see in dogs today why a test or at least some kind of formal education is not required before someone can label themselves a trainer. I think it is crazy that one can just order a correspondence course and in under 6 months brag of certification as a dog trainer.
I only ask because I was at a petsmart and a woman was there trying to get her dog to sit. The dog (not a puppy)was jumping up on people as they walked by(scratched a little girl in the face) and all she did was to repeat sit, sit, sit, so I got tired of watching and I told her that if she wanted the dog to listen to her she needed to give the command once and if he did not do it to help him do it with a pop on the collar and a push on the rump. Well you would have thought I told her to beat the dog, she told me her trainer(petsmart employee) who has been training her dog for six months does not recommend such harsh methods, they use positive reinforcement only and that most people frown on abuse. All I could say is good luck and tell her I hope next time your dog hurts somebody”s child due to your lack of control they do not hurt your dog or you.

I absolutely love dogs and feel a real connection to them. Most dogs love me and get along with me really well. I thought I could put this quality to use in a profession that would make a difference. I am looking into becoming an apprentice guide dog trainer. Is this a rewarding job? Is it frustrating at times if the dog just doesn’t seem to be learning something? Does anyone know what positions like this pay? I live Long Island, NY. If you know anything about it or know someone who does it, can you please share your experiences. I have already looked at the website, but I’m looking for real life experiences, opinions and testimonials that I might not necessarily see on the website. Thanks!

Becoming a dog trainer?

Koukla asked:

I’m just wondering if anyone know how someone could get into dog training/rehabilitation? Kind of along the *tv shows* Dogtown or Dog Whisperer line. What if any schooling goes into it and how would someone go about getting a job at a dog rehabilitation center?

Dog trainer certification/degree?

Helena Handbasket asked:

I’ve always wondered what I would have to do to become a legitimate/certified dog trainer. Correct me if I’m wrong but it doesn’t seem like something you’d go to college for.

For example, if I wanted to work at PetsMart as a dog trainer, would they hire me if I wasn’t certified (if there is such a thing)?

I only got my first two dogs 6 months ago and have really enjoyed transforming them into generally good citizens and am even interested in perhaps making it a career. How do I go about becoming a professional dog trainer? And maybe even walking dogs?
For clarification, I want to train for good behavior and solve behavioral issues

Dog obedience/behaviorist?

asked:

I am 16 and thinking about becoming a dog trainer basically. I used to breed and train labs for hunting, and I have a lot of experience and patience. How do I become a dog trainer? I know most people are self employed so I would need to know stuff about owning my own business, I have all that info as my dad owns his own business. But, how to I go about actually becoming a trainer?
