I remember a time when the “rolled up newspaper” method of dog training was the accepted norm. Back then, many trainers taught their dogs to do amazing things (and do them quite well) using methods that most folks today would consider “cruel”. I’m not advocating any particular school of training here, but I was wondering: What happened that most people changed their training habits? How did positive reinforcement start, and do you think it will continue to be the preferred method of dog training?
Does anybody here really believe that folks who trained their dogs using harsh methods actually loved their dogs any less?
Is it really so bad to learn out of fear? Once again, I’m not advocating a particular training method, but if it works is it such a bad thing?
St. Lady raises a good point … I too learned many things out of fear of my parents’ reactions to things I did when I was younger. I learned right from wrong because I knew that wrong behaviors had negative consequences. I think I turned out OK. Couldn’t a dog?
Anybody who wants to read a good article about how Ian Dinbar started positive reinforcement and how he compares to Caesar Milan’s methods should definately click DogJudge’s link.

Becoming a certified dog trainer?

I want to become a certified dog trainer to breed and train German Shepherds and then sale them. I would like to know if there is any classes out there that do not require you to have hands on training.
Yes, the hands on is the most important part and I’m in training classes with my dog right now and I’m trying to read everthing I can get my hands on. Also, I work with my dog about 3 times a day. But I just wanted to find a place that would certified me just from taking on line classes. But I plan on going to all the dog classes with my dog that I can.

that class who is very anti-social. She was mistreated by a vet tech and since then does not trust most people and has issues with other dogs. She has attended one other class and made a lot of progress but that was about 6 weeks ago and she regressed somewhat in that time. Any suggestions on how I can help her become better socialized? Her Mom cannot afford private classes with me or with an in-home trainer so this is her best option.

What do I need? Where do I go to become trained so i can be eligble to become a professional trainer? (not like petsmart) . But i want to start figuring out what I need to do to become one? Is it difficult?

Are they paid pretty decent?

Do they go to college for it? Any bits of detail you can give me would be helpful.

Dont tell me to go to a dog trainer and ask because that wont get me a certificate of dog trainership or something. lawl.

i wanna know what i need

I am blown away by how much they charge! They want $125-$150 just for a consultation and then $100 per hour. I am a teacher who went to college for 6 years, has 2 degrees (just to become a teacher) and I earn $125 per DAY (not hour) now as a substitute.

Is it because I’m in San Jose, CA where everything is insanely priced or do ALL dog trainers everywhere get $100 per hour???

I have a 5 month Doberman Pinscher who comes from show bloodlines. Our breeder and trainer believe that he would make “the perfect show dog”, feeling confident that he would take home many awards. However, I am worried about this process. Is it expensive? Is the life very difficult and demanding? I don’t want to subject him to harsh expectations. He is still a pup now, but if I wanted to show him in the future, what would I need to do?

Dog Trainer Academy/School?

Posted by: dogtraining | Comments (4)
Lisa asked:

Before I logged off this morning, I was reading a question where the user wanted to become a certified dog trainer, and several answers gave her advice. One answer reccomended a couple of schools-one in Ohio, one in California, both of which that answerer linked to.

Being quite a nosey, curious person, I checked out both links, and was reading about them, but decided to go do my thing, and jump back on later, when I had a moment.

Now that I have that moment-I can’t for the life of me find the link to the one in California! I checked my browser history, found the one in Ohio, but not the other link. I checked the last 10 pages in this category, have found nothing. Maybe I overlooked something, though. I’m hoping someone who answered that question, and knows what I’m talking about, can point me back to it, so I can finish my reading. I even googled it, and still can’t find it.

…I don’t think that school wants me to finish reading about them, LOL!
I don’t remember the name of the asker. :(

This was the other link mentioned, by the answerer:
http://www.nk9.com/

I do remember the school offered a Master degree in something. They offered classes in different things-nutrition, dog breeds, ETC.

And for the first answerer- I know, but like I said, I like to look at things. Heck, yesterday I was out of the county, and just had to drop in to a few of the local stores (like K-mart), just to see what they looked like, and if the store was anything like our local K-mart. I’m just that type of person-I like to see all sorts of things, so I was going to finish reading about it. Lol.

Oh, well. If I can’t find it, I can’t find it. Thanks for the help/stars. :o )
