I’m seeking any and all advice that experienced trainers have to offer regarding certification, experience, business aspects, and training for myself. Where should I start and how did you get started?

t_golike asked:

I am working with a local trainer that has been training/rehabilitating dogs for quite a long time. She is very good at what she does, and is both well liked and well respected in our community. I am also currently with her help owner training a service dog to help mitigate my disabilities. We are trying to determine if there is enough interest in the tri-state, specifically the Evansville, IN area to warrant starting classes for people that are owner training their service dogs. These classes would be both group settings as well as private lessons that would help with obedience through CGC, public access testing and certification, as well as task training. We would also have field trips to get the dogs socialized to different situations they will encounter in the “real” world. We might also eventually offer fully trained service dogs when the need arises. If you live near Evansville, do you see a need for this type of program locally? Thank you for your time.

Verizon Mini Notebook

Shepherdgirl § asked:

I have been mentoring for 6 years with a dog trainer who has been teaching and training dogs for forty years and I still have a lot to learn. My mentor has so much knowledge(judges, teaches, knows all the AKC rules and standards and runs obedience programs) but still does not claim to be an expert. I do not understand why with all of the aggression problems and behavioral problems that we see in dogs today why a test or at least some kind of formal education is not required before someone can label themselves a trainer. I think it is crazy that one can just order a correspondence course and in under 6 months brag of certification as a dog trainer.
I only ask because I was at a petsmart and a woman was there trying to get her dog to sit. The dog (not a puppy)was jumping up on people as they walked by(scratched a little girl in the face) and all she did was to repeat sit, sit, sit, so I got tired of watching and I told her that if she wanted the dog to listen to her she needed to give the command once and if he did not do it to help him do it with a pop on the collar and a push on the rump. Well you would have thought I told her to beat the dog, she told me her trainer(petsmart employee) who has been training her dog for six months does not recommend such harsh methods, they use positive reinforcement only and that most people frown on abuse. All I could say is good luck and tell her I hope next time your dog hurts somebody”s child due to your lack of control they do not hurt your dog or you.

Verizon Mini Notebook

Pit Bull Hugger! asked:

As I stated in another question I am really interested in learning more about do training after i graduate may 26th. Due to where i live I don’t really have the option of meeting other dog trainers and have really no idea how to get my foot in the door to learning. So I found a program it’s done both online and in real life. at the end of the 4-5 months i get to take a test and get a certification.

What I’m asking is, could the be a step in right direction to learning more about training dogs?

Here is the curriculum–
-http://animalbehaviorcollege.com/curriculum.asp
well i’ve grown up on a ranch and worked with the dogs we use to train cattle as well as i walked dogs for two summers. I know a lady her who shows aussies i’ve spoken with her before but i don’t know if i could ask her to be a mentor?

The apartment she moved into said that if she had a doctors slip she stating that a service animal would be beneficial she could have him, then after she moved into the apartment complex, they gave her a note saying they want certification of the dog, or she must get rid of it. Is this a violation of the ADA???

Verizon Mini Notebook
